Preventative Dental Care
Dental Exams & Cleanings
Your health matters, and to enjoy the best health possible you need strong teeth and healthy gums. While you might think that your oral health only matters when it comes to eating, drinking or smiling, research has shown that oral health conditions like tooth decay and gum disease can also impact your overall health. Significant links have been found to exist between an individual’s oral health and his or her long-term risk of a variety of chronic diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and even some forms of cancer. The most effective way of lower your risk of developing chronic disease is by protecting and improving your oral health.
For the best oral health possible, the American Dental Association recommends brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily. The ADA also recommends scheduling regular dental exams and cleanings with Dr. Sefcik and our experienced staff of dental hygienists at Four Seasons Dental Care. Regular checkups and exams provide Dr. Sefcik the opportunity to spot any potential signs of tooth decay or gum disease early on before the condition has a chance to develop. Dr. Sefcik will also perform an oral cancer screening as part of every exam. The early diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer is a vital part in helping to improve a patient’s chance of recovery. Dental cleanings provide our gentle staff of dental hygienists the chance to remove built-up deposits of plaque from below and along the surface of your gum line and teeth. Plaque ranks as the primary cause of tooth decay and gum disease, making plaque removal vital to protecting your long-term oral health.
At Four Seasons Dental Care, we typically recommend patients schedule dental exams and cleanings once every six months. However, depending on the current state of a patient’s oral health, more frequent cleanings may be required. Don’t neglect your oral health by waiting until a problem develops before scheduling a visit to our Colorado Springs dentist’s office. Take preventative action and protect your long-term oral and overall health.
Your teeth rank as one the hardest and most resilient parts of your body. The hard outer layer of your teeth, called the enamel, provides your teeth the durability and resilience needed to survive a lifetime of crunching, munching, chipping and chewing. Unfortunately, certain types of oral bacteria produces harmful substances that can weaken or erode away your teeth’s enamel, exposing the delicate tissue and nerves inside. When tooth enamel becomes worn or cracked, you’re at a much higher risk for developing tooth decay and gum disease.
Fluoride is a a mineral naturally found in food and water that helps teeth become more resistant to the effects of oral bacteria and decay. Fluoride treatments help to strengthen tooth enamel and repair any damage caused by oral bacteria through a process known as remineralization. Once your teeth have been exposed to fluoride, they become even more resistant to harmful bacteria, making them less likely to suffer the effects of decay in the future.
Typically applied to the back molars to help protect teeth from the harmful effects of decay, dental sealants make a great option for younger patients. Teeth feature a lot of cracks and crevices that can be easily missed during brushing, especially by younger patients who don’t possess the dexterity or attention to detail necessary to adequately remove lingering food particles and bacteria from these hard to reach places of the mouth. A thin plastic coating, dental sealants “seal” away these hard to clean areas in the mouth from the oral bacteria that causes tooth decay and cavities. Dental sealants are easily applied in just one visit, and are durable enough to last several years before a reapplication is needed.
Cosmetic Dental Care
Teeth whitening has quickly become the most commonly performed cosmetic dental treatment in the U.S. One look at the spectacular results offered by teeth whitening and it’s easy to see why. Teeth discolored by the effects of a lifetime of eating and drinking tooth-staining substance like red wine can once again sparkle. At Four Seasons Dental Care, Dr. Sefcik uses Philips Professional Zoom Whitening to help restore the luster lost to patients’ teeth. With Philips Zoom, Dr. Sefcik can transform your teeth eight shades whiter after just one 45-minute treatment!
Don’t underestimate the importance of a brilliantly bright smile. Schedule a consultation today with Dr. Sefcik to see if your teeth are healthy enough for Zoom whitening treatment.
Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of porcelain used to recreate the natural look of teeth, while also providing the comparable strength and resilience of natural tooth enamel. Porcelain veneers often make the best choice for patients looking to make minor position alterations, or to change tooth color, size and/or shape.
Scheduling a consultation with Dr. Sefcik is the first step in determining whether porcelain veneers are right for you. It’s important to have a clear idea of what cosmetic changes you want made so that Dr. Sefcik has the correct information to work with. Dr. Sefcik will begin your consultation by conducting a smile analysis to determine what steps are needed to achieve your desired smile.
To apply the veneer, a minuscule amount of tooth enamel must first be removed. In most cases, the amount removed is less than a millimeter. Removal of original tooth enamel is necessary to make room for the porcelain veneer to fit within the mouth and accurately restore the natural function of your teeth while creating a better looking aesthetic than the original tooth. It typically takes three office visits to complete the application of porcelain veneers.
When a patient suffers structural damage to the size, shape or function of their teeth, a dental crown can be placed to cover a tooth and restore its functionality and appearance to normal. A dental crown can also help to strengthen a tooth that holds a large filling when not enough of the tooth’s natural structure remains in place. Crowns can also be used to attach bridges, protect a weakened tooth from breaking or restore a tooth that has already broken. A crown also offers a great solution when covering badly misshapen or discolored teeth.
Restorative Dental Care
Composite fillings, or tooth-colored fillings, provide patients with long-lasting durability and increased resistance to fracture in small and medium-sized fillings that need to withstand the constant pressure and stress associated with chewing. Composite fillings can be placed in either front or back teeth, and they provide a more natural appearance when compared to traditional amalgam, or metallic, fillings. Unlike amalgam fillings, composite fillings contain no traces of mercury, making them a safer, healthier alternative to traditional metal fillings.
Patients who are missing one or more teeth may notice a difference when it comes to speaking and chewing. Dental bridges can help to restore your smile back to the way it once was. Occasionally referred to as a fixed partial denture, bridges literally “bridge” the gap created by one or more missing teeth with a set of artificial teeth. Bridges can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, alloys, gold or a combination of these materials. While a removable bridge can be taken out and cleaned, a fixed bridge can only be removed by Dr. Sefcik. The type of bridge a patient may need will depend on the current state of their oral health and what Dr. Sefcik recommends.
For patients missing teeth, dentures offer a long-lasting solution for repairing the state of their smile. Dentures provide patients with the ability to once again eat, talk, drink and smile like they did before. For patients who still maintain some of their natural teeth, partial dentures offer a great solution for restoring their smile, while full dentures help patients with no teeth remaining to regain full function. Our staff at Four Seasons Dental Care has the tools necessary to process all full and partial dentures in-office to ensure the best and most comfortable fit possible.
